Marbled Milk Paper Lesson Plan

Title of Lesson: Marbled Milk Paper

National Standards: N/A

Texas Essential Knowledge Skills (TEKS):
(1)    Perception. The student develops and organizes ideas from the environment. The student is expected to:
(B)  identify art elements such as color, texture, form, line, space, and value and art principles such as emphasis, pattern, rhythm, balance, proportion, and unity in artworks.
(2)  Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to:
         (C)  produce drawings, paintings, prints, constructions, ceramics, and fiberart, using a variety of art materials appropriately.
(3)  Historical/cultural heritage. The student demonstrates an understanding of art history and culture as records of human achievement. The student is expected to:
         (A)  compare content in artworks from the past and present for various purposes such as telling stories and documenting history and traditions;

Objectives:
1. The students will use milk, food coloring, and dish soap to create a unique tie-die
2. After the tie-dies have dried, the students will then draw a picture onto their watercolor paper with a writing utensil of their choice.

Introduction:
·      Ask students what materials they have seen tie-dyed.
·      What patterns do you see in the tie-dyed materials?
·      Teachers will demonstrate how to do the marbled milk paper artwork.

Vocabulary:
Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other stone. Looks similar to tie-dye.
Chemical Reaction- is the change of a substance into a new one that has a different chemical identity.

Social/Historic Context for Lesson: Recognizing the uniqueness of each students marbled milk creation.

Materials Used: Cow’s Milk, Dish Soap, Toothpicks, Food Coloring, Watercolor Paper, Paper plates

Timeline for Lesson: 10-50 minute class periods or depending how well the students enjoy the lesson.

Activity/Procedure:
1.  Before the art lesson the class had two different questions that were asked pertaining tie-dye.

2. The teacher will have plates of milk set in front of each student with about 4 tablespoons of milk.

3. The students will drop 3 drops of each color they chose to use into the milk.

4. They will then get a toothpick and dip it into the dish soap, and then they will put the toothpicks into the food coloring.

5. Get a new toothpick and swirl the toothpicks through all the colors of the milk and you will begin to see a tie-dye effect begin to happen.

6. Before the colors become too mixed, get one sheet of paper and lay it on top of the milk, gently press down then lift it up and allow it to dry.

7. Once the paper dries the students will then draw a picture onto their paper using a writing utensil of their choice.

Assessments (objective or subjective):
1. Were the students able to see the different patterns and lines in their marbled paper and discuss what they were in their groups?

2. What chemical reaction did you see take place as you placed the soap into the plate?
