book Tar Beach as a class and will be able to understand what a story quilt is.

Students will learn the importance and prevalence of textiles

will connect their home and personal lives to school and realize that our their culture,
experiences, and background are important and unique to themselves.

Activity/Procedure:
1. Students come into class with all materials on the table.
2. Read the book Tar beach.
3. Go through the power point over Faith Ringgold, Story Quilts,
and Textiles.
4. Demonstration of class story quilt
5. Students work individually on story quilt (teachers walk
around to tables to help).
6.Put story quilt together
Assessments

1. Students will learn the history and story of Faith Ringgold,
the story quilt, and textiles .
2. Students will work with textiles to develop their own story
quilt square.
